With all of the buzz around the election, the fine folks at Twitter have started to show off some of the possibilities of their service. They started with an election channel, which filters all of the “tweets” sent by users, and anything containing a political reference is added to their Election Feed. With the upcoming Vice Presidential debates, the developers have kicked this feed aggregation up another notch.
Twitter has teamed up with current_, a news site similar to digg. current_, like digg, has users submit news stories which are either voted up or down by the community. The way current_ differs for the sites that have come before it is the use of a television channel. They will take user comments from their print stories
and incorporate them in to the television broadcast.
current_ will be covering the Vice Presidential debates, and they will be taking any tweet tagged with “#current” and add it to a ticker on the bottom of the feed. This will allow Twitter users to give instant feedback to anyone watching current_’s coverage of the debates. They also have coverage lined up for the other two Presidential debates, with the next being October 7th.
This use of user feedback is something that more entertainment venues should look in to. People could send feedback on missed calls during sporting events, participate in “play-along” events during game shows, and send in questions during interviews. How far away are we from seeing user driven entertainment?
